“IKAT … a love story.”
Fabrics tell the story of the whole world, the culture of each people has been woven into the warp and weft of their products. According to a legend, a Khan from Margilan, who already had four wives, fell in love with the daughter of an artist and decided to marry her. At that time, the fifth wife was not recognized as such and thus her father was worried about her fate. The Khan promised to give up only if the artist had produced something more beautiful than his daughter. The artist, sitting on the bank of a stream, saw the clouds and all the colours of the rainbow reflected in the water. In that moment was struck by the idea of copying that beauty he was enjoying on a fabric. The cloth, born from love, surprised the Khan to the point that he gave up on the girl.
In reality, the ikat is a type of dyeing, where parts of the yarns are protected by a ligature so not to be dyed, while not-tied parts stain. The literal meaning of the term is cloud.
